National Sangria Day is celebrated on December 20th every year. While we don’t know the origins of this particular holiday, the early versions of sangria can be traced all the way back to early Greek and Roman traditions where wine was mixed with spices, sugar, and whatever else they had on hand. In the cooler months, this beverage was warmed creating a mulled-wine-like drink.
The word sangria (unattractively) means “bloodletting” in Spanish and Portuguese – a term that can be traced back to the 1700s. History lesson aside, our ancient ancestors were onto something – something tasty and versatile.
